Two hounds and a pussy

Updated: Jul 5

Tossing and turning in bed for what felt like the umpteenth time, AJ reluctantly opened her eyes. Her bladder was on the verge of exploding and she had to get up. But getting that message through her drowsy mind to her equally 'drowsy' limbs was proving difficult. Finally, after some more tossing and turning, she staggered out of bed to the bathroom next door, instinctively turning on her bedroom light as she left. Ten minutes later, she was done with business and making her way out of the loo when she noticed a figure to her left, watching her by the kitchen doorway. The kitchen light was off making it difficult for AJ to see the person's face and eyes. Eager to dispel the awkward silence, she turned to approach the figure, but stopped shy of speaking when it slunk further back into the kitchen. Creepy! She didn't mean to unsettle the hooded body and respectfully made a slow retreat to her own bedroom directly behind her. Unbeknownst to AJ, that encounter was the birth of a spirit in her life, a black and white one. Different cultures speak of this mythical soul, calling it Tui and La, Yin and Yang, Good and Evil. Being AJ, she took the odd event to her FATHER and asked that HE reveal it's meaning to her. In answer, HE showed her visions of twin spirits in her life. For a sorrowful spirit in the supermarket was a joyful one in the bar next door; for a vengeful spirit at her gates unable to enter and moving on, was a forgiving one watching her as she returned home. And so spirit portals were forged and reveled to AJ, to guide her through life's trials and milestones.

One day as she was gallivanting about her neighborhood, she saw a grey cat sitting under a hedge next to a red gate. Surprisingly, the feline's face was contorted and eyes unclear; but as intrigued as she was, she walked past the pussy to her own gated community a turn and few feat away. After father's passing, AJ moved from home, into a cottage owned by two generations of widows. She opened the community's black gate and was moving towards her cottage (situated at the back) when the matriarch of the household came rushing out the main house. Unlike the grey cat, her face was clear and eyes unusually large which brought AJ to a halt. A warm, elderly woman, AJ had come to know the matriach as 'Oma'. "Hi, how are you?" she enquired of AJ. "I'm okay, how are you?" AJ replied. Greetings and niceties exchanged, Oma instructed AJ to gather all trash at the cottage and place it in the dumpster where they collectively piled and burnt garbage. Duly instructed, she was leaving the yard in the wee hours of the next day when she realized she'd discarded all her trash earlier that week, and only had an old tooth brush and empty tube of toothpaste to contribute to the family garbage pile. Nonetheless, she did as Oma said and left the two items in the bin, taking only her little blue brush; a mythical representation of her boyfriend MJ, to serve as a shield. Brush in hand, she meant to confront the grey cat but was disappointed when she didn't find it. Defiant and unwilling to return home with no answers, she 'brushed off' her disappointment, put her hand through the square magical door cut out in the middle of the red gate, felt for the latch directly below the window, slid the lever out of it's catch, pushed and entered. Immediately, she was welcomed by the excited barks of a hound with 'clear' eyes. The animal was standing at the left corner of an orange house located in the center of the yard. No sooner had the hound seen and howled at her, than it retreated to the back of the house. In it's stead came charging a similar hound, but with 'dark' eyes. AJ mastered as much courage as she could and shoved her only weapon, the blue brush, at the animal to halt it's assault. The hound stopped at her feet and she commanded, "Is this what you want?" referring to her brush, "take it!". The animal hovered only for a while and ran to the back of the house, disappearing as the first had. With no dogs to distract her, she then took in the property; before the orange house was a graveled yard strewn with small and large stones here and there; to her adjacent left was a mango tree; while a manicured lawn with various flowers and a barbed wire round it lay to her right; also and oddly, the house had no curtains to cover or adorn its windows and she thought she saw someone on the inside. The two hounds re-appeared side by side, and at the very corner they'd turned earlier. This time, however, a bitch with four large breasts wedged itself between them, and typical of animals, they sniffed and run after it when it too turned the corner to the back of the house. That was it? AJ wondered. As far as mysteries went, this was one for the books. Seriously? What was the pussycat trying to communicate?? Disappointed yet again, she turned to leave and was just about to open the gate when curiosity (against all logical admonition that it killed the cat) drove her to take one last look at the house, only to find the hound with 'dark' eyes at her right heel, beseeching her. A sucker at heart, she felt for the animal and turned to face it, "is this what you want?" she asked of the animal, blue brush extended yet again. That seemed to excite the hound and it hoped out of sight. And that was when she noticed a green tent with a lit lamp inside it, sitting on the lawn. Interesting!

Still unsure what to make of the orange house and it's visions, she walked to the tent, placed her blue brush at it's entrance and left the yard. Perhaps her next adventure would reveal the meaning of the two hounds, bitch and tent.
